Oral Hygiene

Oral hygiene is a very important part in the long lasting health of your smile. While braces and other technology-based treatments can improve the look and aesthetics of your smile, many at-home habits can also dramatically improve the appearance and health of your teeth and gums.

Braces, bands and wires can trap plaque build-up and food particles throughout your treatment. To avoid infection, tooth decay, tooth discoloration and cavities, proper and consistent brushing, flossing, and rinsing are advised. Another aid you may find useful during your braces treatment is an interdental toothbrush (proxabrush), which brushes under the wires between teeth. This removes food and bacteria that can be missed with a standard toothbrush.

After your braces have been removed, or if you are undergoing retention therapy, the hygiene of your retainer is also very important. Dr. Lennard recommends that every time you brush your teeth, it is important to also brush your retainer. You can also soak your retainer in warm (not hot) water and a denture-cleaning tablet found at drug stores to sterilize and improve the taste of your retainer.

Foods to avoid during your orthodontic treatment vary slightly. If your teeth and gums are sore, stick to soft foods that are easy to chew and swallow. Sticky, sugary foods should be avoided, as they may damage wiring and cause plaque build-up in hard-to-brush areas.
